AI personalizes OOH ads in real time
Who & For What
For a Tokyo-based media planner or brand manager considering how generative AI will impact their Q4 OOH media buys and creative briefing process.
vs. Japan Play
This goes beyond current Dentsu/Hakuhodo programmatic DOOH offerings, which typically use pre-set conditional triggers, by employing true generative AI for real-time creative adaptation.
Tokyo Take
While interesting, Tokyo's DOOH infrastructure and data integration for real-time AI-driven creative are still developing. Expect a 6-12 month lag before similar capabilities are widely available from domestic players like CyberAgent's OOH or LINE Yahoo! Ads.
Global beverage giant Sparkle Soda, in partnership with creative agency Momentum Creative, launched its "Future Flavors" campaign on July 17, 2026. This initiative features dynamically generated digital out-of-home (DOOH) advertisements, marking a significant step in real-time creative adaptation for large-scale urban campaigns.
The core of this campaign lies in its use of generative AI to personalize visuals and messaging across DOOH screens. Instead of static or pre-programmed conditional creative, Sparkle Soda aims to achieve hyper-contextual relevance by adapting its ads based on live data feeds. The objective is to enhance engagement and brand recall within high-density urban environments, moving beyond traditional broadcast methods.
How the model works
The campaign employs CanvasAI, a proprietary platform developed for this purpose. CanvasAI continuously ingests a range of real-time data points, including local weather conditions, public event schedules, traffic flow patterns, and anonymized demographic data from specific geographic zones. Using this aggregated information, the AI generates unique creative iterations that are then pushed to DOOH screens in cities such as London and New York.
For example, a DOOH screen located near a park might display an ad for a refreshing, icy "Sparkle Soda" variant during a heatwave, emphasizing hydration. Conversely, the same screen near a concert venue might feature a celebratory message with a different product variant as attendees exit the event, reflecting a festive mood. This granular adaptation is designed to resonate more directly with the immediate environment and audience mindset.
While data-driven DOOH is not a novel concept, Sparkle Soda's approach differentiates itself by moving beyond simple rule-based triggers or manual content rotations. It represents an early deployment of truly autonomous creative generation at scale within public advertising spaces. Many competitors still rely on pre-defined asset libraries or human-curated adjustments, making Sparkle Soda's real-time, AI-driven creative a notable advancement in programmatic outdoor media.
"The system learns and refines its creative output in response to real-world engagement signals, continuously optimizing for relevance," a Momentum Creative spokesperson noted.
The immediate challenge for Sparkle Soda will be demonstrating the incremental impact of this dynamic personalization on sales and brand perception. For the broader industry, the campaign sets a precedent for how AI can be integrated into creative production at a programmatic level, raising questions about the future role of human creative teams and the scalability of such complex systems across diverse markets and media channels.
